When you're looking for a serious shotgun for real-world use, the Mossberg 590 RM 12 Gauge should be high on your list. At Mud Lake Ranch, we’re all about firearms that deliver in the field, on the range, and in defense scenarios. The 590 RM (Riot Mag) is Mossberg’s nod to the no-nonsense utility shotgun — and after running it on the range, we came away impressed with its performance, durability, and purpose-driven design.

First Impressions
The 590 RM is a classic 12-gauge pump with tactical furniture and unique magazine fed design. It’s got that rugged, military-inspired look and feel that reminds you this gun was made for more than just sitting in a gun safe.

Right out of the box, the controls were familiar — ambidextrous rotary safety, a well-textured forend, 5 position adjustable stock with interchangable butt pad and 2 QD sling mounts, and a smooth, clean action. It ships with Magpul MBUS sites and a Picatinny rail for optics mounting. The 18 1/2-inch barrel keeps things compact without sacrificing performance, and the 10 +1 capacity gives you peace of mind whether you're clearing property, defending the home, or training on steel. The magazine is a first of it's kind double stack 12 guage accepting 2 3/4 in shells. It inserts easily rocking and locking into place similar to the function of an AK-47. Loading the mag was initially cumbersome but quickly got better at stuffing shells into this bohemeth of a magazine.

Range Day
We took the 590 RM out to our new range and fed it light target loads and a variety of slugs. Not once did we experience a failure to feed, extract, or eject. The action cycles like you'd expect from a seasoned pump — solid, positive, and confidence-inspiring. Recoil was surprisingly manageable, especially for a 12-gauge, thanks to the recoil pad and balance of the platform.
The Nightstar red dot sight we installed was a huge plus here. Quick target acquisition, even in low light, made shooting fast and accurate. The flat-faced trigger is light and crips. For those wondering about the bore; it does come with the Accu-Choke System and cylinder bore choke installed. I expected it to not include a choke and was suprised to find this feature in there below the stand-off door breacher at the end of the barrel.
Why It Matters
Whether you're in law enforcement, keeping your homestead secure, or just want a dependable shotgun that doesn’t cut corners, this is the kind of firearm that earns its keep. This sadly doesn't really fit any hunting application; in my opinion, it is strictly for defense and fun at the range. It is truely a unique and collectable realease from Mossberg
Final Thoughts
The Mossberg 590 RM 12 Gauge is the kind of shotgun we’d bet our lives on — and that's not something we say lightly. The magazine is proprietary, large and unique coming in at around $100 for a spare. It would be wise to add a couple of these to take advantage of the fast reloadign capability of its magazine-fed design and to enure you have a mag on hand if something happens to the original. The Mossberg 590 RM is affordable considering it's unique design; the MSRP is around $1100. It proved to be reliable, fun and accurate. At Mud Lake Ranch, we’ve always respected tools that get the job done, and this one does it with grit.
