If you’ve spent any time around shotguns, you know they haven’t changed much over the years. Long barrels, long stocks, and a whole lot of length to deal with in tight spaces. Then along comes something like
So the question is: is this thing actually practical… or just cool?
I spent some time running the KS7 out here at Mud Lake Ranch, and here’s the honest take.
First Impressions: Small Package, Big Attitude
The first thing you notice when you pick up the KS7 is how compact it is. This is not your granddad’s shotgun.
At just over 26 inches overall length with a full 18.5-inch barrel, it’s dramatically shorter than a traditional pump shotgun.
That’s the magic of the bullpup design—everything gets pushed back behind the trigger. The result? A shotgun that’s easy to maneuver in tight quarters without sacrificing barrel length.
And weight? Right around 6 pounds depending on configuration.
That’s light for a 12 gauge. And yeah… that matters later.

KS7 Specs (Quick Breakdown)
Gauge: 12 GA (3” chamber)
Capacity: 6+1 (3”) or 7+1 (2¾”)
Barrel Length: 18.5”
Overall Length: 26.1”
Weight: ~5.9lbs (unloaded)
Action: Pump-action, bullpup
Ejection: Downward (fully ambidextrous)
Handling & Ergonomics: Surprisingly Natural
I’ll be honest—bullpups can feel weird. But the KS7 is one of the more intuitive ones I’ve handled.
The balance point sits right at your hands, which makes it easy to point and swing. That’s a big deal for a shotgun.
The pistol grip feels more like a rifle than a shotgun, and once you get used to it, it actually makes a lot of sense—especially for quick target transitions.
The carry handle up top? The Gen2 doesn't have it Gen1 was removable and personally, I wish they had kept it but the rail for optics is an improvement.

The Bullpup Advantage (Where This Thing Shines)
This is where the KS7 earns its keep.
Because of its compact size:
It’s extremely maneuverable in tight spaces
Easier to store or transport
Great for moving through brush, vehicles, or structures
This is exactly what it was designed for—close quarters use.
Compared to a traditional 40-inch pump shotgun, you’re shaving off over a foot of length. That’s not a small difference—it’s the difference between bumping into door frames and moving freely.
Range Time: Fun… But It Talks Back
Let’s not sugarcoat it.
This thing kicks.
Because the KS7 is so light, recoil is noticeably sharper than heavier shotguns. That’s just physics.
After a few rounds with slugs, you’ll know you’ve been shooting.
That said:
It cycles smoothly
It’s fast to run
It absolutely hammers steel and 2 liter bottles
And honestly? It’s a blast to shoot. There’s something about ripping through a tube of 12 gauge out of something this compact that just feels… right.
Pros & Cons (Mud Lake Ranch Take)
What I Like
Extremely compact and maneuverable
Lightweight and easy to carry
Unique, innovative design
Plenty of firepower in a small package
What I Don’t
Recoil is stout
Loading bites - for some reason this one mars shells and my thumb

Final Verdict: Who Is This For?
The KS7 isn’t trying to replace your classic pump shotgun—it’s trying to do something different.
And it succeeds.
This is a purpose-built shotgun for:
Tight spaces
Truck gun setups
Range fun with a tactical edge
Folks who appreciate innovative design
If you want something ultra-compact and are willing to learn its quirks, the KS7 delivers.
If you want something simple, traditional, and forgiving… this probably isn’t your first pick.
Closing Thoughts from the Ranch
At the end of the day, the KelTec KS7 is one of those guns that makes you smile the first time you shoot it—and maybe wince a little on the seventh shot.
It’s not perfect. It’s not traditional. But it is different—and sometimes that’s exactly what makes something worth owning.
Out here at Mud Lake Ranch, that counts for a lot.
